Today has *not* been my day.
Feeling kind of crappy. In the emotional way, not the physical/sick way. Definately glad I'm not in a firetower right now. >.> Clearly prolonged periods of solitude aren't good for me.
Today has been a total waste of a day. All I can say is, at least my alarm went off. Of course, then I went back to sleep after breakfast, but we can ignore that.
Work was psycho. Seriously. I had about three hours of extra work to do on top of my normal stuff. Well, one of the hours was normal stuff actually. The cake slices just had to be empty on the day when Raspinder asked me to help her finish stuff and Evert asked me to clean out the proofers. Note to self: learn how to say 'no.' It was probably the first word you learned. It can't be that difficult.
Not only that, but I had to go grocery shopping after work, and then drag the bags home on the bus. I want a car. Cars are lovely, fast, and can get me home in five minutes as opposed to 15 - 30 on transit (depending if I catch the bus or not).
And then, at four-thirtyish, the power went out.
Just...sudden silence and darkness and a collective "oh" by everyone in the store. I'm very glad I was finished most of my baking and was not in the freezer. It doesn't have emergency lighting, which makes sense. What doesn't make sense is that the bathrooms don't. I mean, if the power goes out in the middle of the night and you have to go, what do you do? Feel your way? Not cool, not cool at all. The bathrooms are icky.
It's crazily quiet without the fans and the air-conditioning going on at work. You can hear a kid screaming all the way from the deli to the bakery. They probably heard him in housewares.
Of course, with the power out, I couldn't do anything. I couldn't go in the feezer. I couldn't package things (label machine uses electricity). I couldn't clean the proofer (thank the Goddess). My overtime was suddenly gone. I didn't miss it. I spent half an hour putting cardboard over the cakes in the vain attempt to prevent them from going bad in the rapidly heating store. By the time I left, the power was still out and they were giving away the ice cream. Unfortunately, I didn't see that. No free ice cream for me. No groceries either. The cash registers weren't working. Surprise surprise. Eventually the phones stopped working too. I'm glad I left. It was kind of fun, in a giggly 'this is totally different than anything' kind of way, but I wouldn't want to work for five hours in the dark like the night staff have to.
What doesn't make sense is that almost every other store around Superstore had power. I mean, what the hell?! I talked to a lady who worked in Starbucks at the bus-stop. Apparently their power went out for half an hour or so. Ours was out for an hour and a half. At least. It's a freaking grocery store for heaven's sake! There goes the milk, the frozen section, the sea food, the eggs. Ugh. Another lady from customer service said that the city cut the power in a third of the city in an attempt to save electricity. I looked for news of it online and coulnd't find any. *sigh* I should just be happy that I got out of cleaning the proofers today.
Oh, and I dropped half my oven face-down in the oven while it was on. Go me. I need to clean up the rest of it now that the oven's cooled of. I don't want the stupid stuff smoking and smelling the next time I want to bake something.
Another good thing: I have power at home. Obviously. I'm glad my milk and eggs and frozen stuff isn't going to go bad. Well, not immediately anyway.
Still...
I want a cat. I want to hear it purr and fall asleep on my lap as my legs go numb. That would make my day that much better.
*sigh*
